Fresh fish and Skagen have gone hand in hand for hundreds of years.
In the1300's, fish - especially herring, was the reason for Skagens growth. The town was granted a municipal charter as long ago as 1413 and it is thought that Skagen was the biggest town in the north of Jutland at that time.
Fresh fish along with shellfish are still the main attractions of Skagen, although the attraction of both the surrounding countryside and art are now competitors in this field.
Today Skagen is home to a number of fish industries and fish exporters who supply the whole of Europe and many other countries world-wide with first class fresh fish.
